Dr. Daan van Heesch (°1992) is a Postdoctoral Fellow at KU Leuven and affiliated with Illuminare – Centre for the Study of Medieval Art. He received his PhD in Art History from KU Leuven in 2019 with a dissertation on the cross-cultural receptions of Hieronymus Bosch in the early modern Habsburg world (supervisors: Jan Van der Stock and Paul Vandenbroeck).
Daan has received several grants and awards for his work, including the Rogier van der Weyden Prize (2014) and the Bader Prize (2019). He completed an internship at the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History in 2013 and received a PhD scholarship from the Veronique Vandekerchove Chair of the City of Leuven the following year. Between 2015 and 2019 Daan was a PhD Fellow in Art History at the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO).
His research on Bosch, Antwerp art and the global reach of prints has appeared in journals such as Simiolus, Print Quarterly, Master Drawings and Oud Holland. He is co-editor of Netherlandish Art and Luxury Goods in Renaissance Spain (Harvey Miller 2018). Daan’s current research project sits at the intersection of art history and manuscript culture and explores the pictorial notebooks of Paulus de Kempenaer (ca. 1554-1618) and the emotional efficacy of art in the Dutch Revolt.
