The 10th Annual ARDS Colloquium, which promotes and celebrates new research in the field of medieval and Renaissance sculpture, will focus on the interaction and interplay between the Low Countries and Italy in medieval and Renaissance sculpture. The conference will take place in Rome, at the Academia Belgica and the Royal Netherlands Institute Rome (KNIR) from 7 November until 9 November 2023. The conference program consists of lectures, in combination with a choice of excursions.

Max Wiringa, Affiliated Researcher at Illuminare, will deliver a lecture at the conference, entitled “Giambologna and Della Porta”. Before settling in Florence, Giambologna is known to have spent two years in Rome in the early 1550s. Based on a possible friendship between the two sculptors inferred from one of Guglielmo Della Porta’s later letters, it has been hypothesised that Giambologna studied under Della Porta in the Eternal City. So far, this thesis has lacked convincing evidence. Wiringa’s study aims to strengthen the argument based on his master, Jacques Dubroeucq’s, network, and the analysis of Giambologna’s work.
